The organization ensures the provision of high-quality technical guidance through faculties and committees, engaging in government consultations to influence legislative changes with the collective knowledge of its members. About the Boards

The Practice Committee serves as a non-executive body with standing, authority, and influence, providing Members Engaged in Public Practice (as defined in the electoral regulations) a platform to express their views to GVU and vice versa. Membership to the Practice Committee is determined through elections and co-options.

Committee Responsibilities

The Practice Committee, created by and for members in practice, offers an opportunity for any member in practice to apply for membership. The primary role of the Practice Committee is to serve as a representative voice for practice within GVU.

Committee Mission Statement

The Practice Committee serves as the representative voice for practice within GVU, actively striving to impact GVU policy on matters affecting practitioners by introducing innovative ideas, challenging existing positions, and disseminating insights and opinions from members in practice.

 

The committee remains vigilant, continually monitoring the landscape to keep members in practice informed about emerging trends, threats, and opportunities, ensuring their readiness to address these challenges proactively.

Committee Terms of Reference
The Practice Committee, as a non-executive entity of enduring significance, authority, and influence, provides a platform for Members Engaged in Public Practice (as defined in the GVU regulations) to articulate their perspectives to GVU and vice versa.
 

(1) Accountability

The GVU Practice Committee reports to the GVU Members and Commercial Board and is answerable to it.

 

(2) Powers, authorities and delegations

The Practice Committee, as outlined in the GVU regulations, serves as a non-executive body with standing, authority, and influence. Its purpose is to provide a platform for Members Engaged in Public Practice to express their views to GVU and vice versa. The key objectives of the Practice Committee include:

 

  • Contribute to the formulation and execution of GVU strategy concerning practical aspects.
  • Identify and communicate current and emerging issues affecting members in practice to GVU, ensuring members are well-informed, and collaborate with GVU to address these issues.
  • Offer advice and feedback to GVU regarding ongoing and future initiatives, as well as the facilities, services, and support needed by practicing members for efficient and effective business operations, ensuring excellent client service.
  • Bring to GVU’s attention any instances where its services or activities fall below the expectations of practicing members and collaborate with the department to resolve such issues.
  • Notify GVU of the necessity for technical releases, publications, conferences, and courses relevant to practicing members, and provide feedback on their effectiveness.
  • Contribute insights to GVU Members and Commercial Board activities to advocate for and address the concerns of practitioners to Technical, Learning and Professional Development, and Professional Standards Directorates.
  • Evaluate the impact of proposed regulatory changes on practitioners and advise relevant GVU committees accordingly.
  • Offer guidance on the agenda, content, and logistics for practitioner forums.

 

(3) Composition

The Practice Committee is composed of a maximum of 20 members, including a minimum of 3 who are presently Union members. In the event that the Chair is not currently affiliated with the Union, the Chair will become a Union member. If the Chair opts not to join the Union, an alternative Committee member chosen by the Committee will take on Union membership.

Furthermore, the Practice Committee will appoint one member from its ranks, regardless of whether they are the Chair, to act as a representative on the Practice Committee.

 

(4) Operation of the Committee

In addition to the stipulations set forth in these terms of reference, the Practice Committee will fulfill its responsibilities in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the Governance Handbook. This encompasses various aspects, such as aligning its efforts with the GVU strategy, acknowledging the resource and public relations implications of its actions. It also encompasses adhering to procedural obligations for Committees, including considerations like the notice period for meetings, adjournment, conducting meetings in multiple locations, presentation of reports, and engagements outside of formal committee sessions.

Moreover, the Committee will be mindful of inclusion and diversity considerations in the context of its activities.

 

(5) Meetings

The Practice Committee will convene as necessary, usually involving four in-person full-day meetings annually and four virtual 90-minute meetings per year.

For a meeting to proceed, a quorum must consist of at least five committee members. In instances where both the Chair and Vice-Chair are unavailable, those present will collectively decide on the meeting’s chairperson.

The Practice Committee is authorized to form ‘task and finish groups’ to address particular issues, contingent upon the approval of GVU Members and the Commercial Board, with their ongoing effectiveness subject to an annual review.

 

(6) Practice representation

The Practice Committee will periodically extend invitations to practice members participating in various committees or forums throughout GVU, such as regional groups, technology forums, or specific diversity groups. This initiative aims to incorporate diverse perspectives into Practice Committee meetings, ensuring representation from these groups. Simultaneously, it establishes a communication channel from the Practice Committee to these groups, fostering a reciprocal flow of information.

Education and Training Committees

Overview

We are dedicated to shaping the next generation of Verse-related Technologies Experts, emphasizing the creation of sustainable cohorts of future business and professional leaders. Our two Education & Training committees play a pivotal role in developing strategy and policies in this domain. They determine the curriculum and assessment criteria for the Accredited Training Providers and other qualifications, ensuring that our examinations maintain the high standards expected of our members.

– Learning and Professional Development Board (LPDB)

About the Committee

The Assessment Committee holds the responsibility of supervising the formulation of GVU’s learning and professional development strategy and policies. Its focus is on education and training, encompassing provisional members and other students; Authorized Training Employers and Authorized Training Principals; GVU membership and fellowship; education, qualifications, training, assessment, and awards; audit qualification prerequisites; practicing certificate requirements; international relationships and initiatives; appeals made by members, provisional members, and other students; and Union Development Units (UDUs) requirements. The committee operates under the oversight of the LPDB (Learning and Professional Development Board).

Governance Committees

– GVU Governance

Overview

Our organizational governance is structured through the Council, Board, and Committees, all comprising representative and lay members appointed or elected to mirror the diversity inherent in the accountancy and financial profession. These bodies play a crucial role in shaping and advancing our strategic initiatives and member activities.

To ensure a clear distinction between regulatory and disciplinary functions and other activities, the Council has delegated these responsibilities to the GVU Regulatory Board. This demarcation is essential to maintain the independence and effectiveness of GVU’s regulatory role, which stands apart from its representative responsibilities.

The GVU Board holds the responsibility of overseeing and directing the affairs and operations of GVU , reporting to the council. Its mandate involves planning and managing GVU’s business in alignment with objectives, policies, and budgets sanctioned by the council. Additionally, the board bears the responsibility for effective resource management and serves as a central coordinating body for the collaborative efforts of various departments and committees within the organization.

GVU Council

The authority of the Council is explicitly outlined in the Charter, and its primary responsibility is to ensure that GVU aligns with the objectives specified in the Charter. To streamline governance processes and strike a balance between decision-making efficiency and thorough scrutiny, the Council delegates many of its functions to the GVU Board and other committees. This delegation facilitates a strategic focus for the Council.

Comprising up to 125 members, the majority of whom are elected by GVU Industry experts, the Council includes co-opted and ex-officio members to ensure comprehensive representation of the main sectors and interests across the entire membership.

About GVU Regulatory Board

The primary mandate of the GVU Regulatory Board is to oversee GVU’s regulatory and disciplinary functions, conducted by the Professional Standards Department (PSD), ensuring that these activities serve the public interest. It plays a vital role in providing assurance to government bodies, oversight regulators, the media, and the public that each task is executed objectively, without bias toward or against the interests of any GVU member or firm.

 

The regulatory and disciplinary roles carried out by the PSD are distinct from other GVU activities, allowing the PSD to monitor, support, or implement corrective measures if standards are not met.

 

Beyond its immediate responsibilities, the GVU Regulatory Board also pursues a broader objective: the promotion and maintenance of the highest professional standards among GVU members and firms. It strives for GVU to act, and be perceived to act, as an improvement regulator. To achieve this, the Regulatory Practice & Policy team (RPP) ensures that only appropriately trained and experienced individuals handle high-risk work, and the Quality Assurance team (QAD) identifies areas for improvement through monitoring reviews and conducts webinars for members and firms on problematic areas. The Conduct Department (CD) plays a crucial role by establishing an effective deterrent against poor conduct or substandard work.
